Sergio leaves Atlético after 5 years!

Sad news for all fans of Atlético Madrid. Star striker and team captain Sergio Agüero announced on his official website that he will leave the Club to the beginning of the new season. The 22-year-old world-class player scored 101 goals in 5 years for the Rojiblancos and celebrated the win of two titles. Spanish media have reported during the last days already, however, now Kun personally addressed an open letter to the fans. To which team he is going to go is still written in the stars.

“I have thought about it for quite some time and I am convinced that I have to remain faithful to myself. I think I should not reduce the opportunity to further develop myself and to learn something new. After the period of five hard years, an era is coming to an end and I have to venture a new step. Soon I will be 23 years old and I still have a lot to do. Obviously it is not an economic decision but rather a sporting decision. For that reason I would like to express my appreciation to the Club as they have tried to convince me to stay through a lift in salary which can compete with those of the greatest.

Furthermore, I would like to say that this decision has been come to maturity since a while. This topic has been part of last’s years consultation and discussion in the course of my contract extension with Atléti. I wanted to sign and renovate the contract in order to return what the Club and every Colchonero has given me. If I had not done that I could go on a free and the Club would not receive any money for my transfer.The Club promised me that they will not set any conditions in case I would decide to leave the Club this summer. Due to this promise and taking into consideration that my decision is definite, I have asked the Club to listen to all offers that could come from other Clubs without any reservation.

And I address my eternal gratitude to the fans. I do not wish to sound formal or correct. I rather would like to say, more than any other perceptions, that I am sorry because I know that it is the only way that the fans understand me if I say it from the bottom of my heart. Because that is how they have talked to me during all these years, with genuine warm-heartedness and sincerity. All of you are already part of my identity and a part how I understand football.

We have shared moments of happiness and disappointment; the 101 goals and the achievement of two titles after so many years. I will not forget the celebration at the Neptuno and the very night in Barcelona when we could not win the Copa del Rey. It was worth it, wasn’t it?

All these experiences prove to be true in those things that I have had when I was a little child already: the desire to compete with the best and to win using the only two weapons I have, my footballing skills and my love for the game.
